What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?

There are various types of fillings that your dentist may recommend, but some of the most popular ones are dental inlays and dental onlays.

We are going to tell you everything you need to know about these types of restorative dentistry, including the process, its benefits, and why you should consider doing it. Keep reading, and learn more.

Dental Inlays Vs. Dental Onlays

When you have damaged teeth from cavities, cracks, or clenching and grinding, you may require dental inlays or onlays. A dental inlay is a type of filling that fits into the grooves of the damaged tooth's chewing surface without covering the tooth's bumps. An onlay, on the other hand, is known as a "partial crown" and covers the tooth's bumps.

Both types of fillings help to repair the surface of the tooth, and the procedures are very similar. Unlike other types of fillings, both are known as "indirect" dental fillings because they're made outside of the mouth.

The difference between the two is the amount of tooth coverage. An onlay covers more of the tooth and is thus more prominent. Onlays are also more expensive.

How They Work

The process is basically the same as getting any other type of filling. They may need 1-2 dental appointments.

First, the dentist will numb your mouth and prepare the tooth by either removing the decay (in the case of cavities) or removing some of the structure (in the case of other damage). You'll then bite down on a putty-filled tray to give the dentist an impression of your tooth.

From there, your impression is sent to a lab to create the inlay or onlay. If more time is needed, you'll get a temporary filling to protect the area until your next visit. During the follow-up, they'll remove the temporary filling and place the inlay or onlay.

Benefits of Dental Inlays and Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays offer some advantages over traditional fillings. The major benefit is that they are customized to fit your teeth. Dental inlays and onlays are also durable, providing long-lasting restoration. Another benefit is their aesthetic appeal. Dental inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured. Unlike traditional gold fillings, they are virtually unnoticeable.
