Restore Your Smile with Inlays & Onlays in Calgary

When a filling cannot restore your tooth, you may need an inlay or onlay. At Northland Village Dental Centre in Calgary, we offer both these options to our patients. Learn more about each on this page, or you can contact us directly to schedule an appointment. Are you a first time visitor? We accept new patients young and old.

Onlays and Inlays

Onlays and inlays are typically made of composite resin, gold or porcelain, and are used to replace the damaged areas of the teeth. Inlays are bonded to the surface of the tooth, but onlays require a bigger reconstruction. While similar to an inlay, onlays must extend over one or more of the tooth's cusp surfaces. Gold is a traditional and popular choice, but it is quickly becoming replaced by porcelain, which more closely mimics the look of real teeth.

How Onlays and Inlays Are Retained on Teeth

Usually onlays and inlays will require one or two appointments to complete. Your first visit will be when our team cleans the tooth, and the tooth will then be further prepared for the onlay or inlay. We will take an impression of your tooth to ensure that onlay or inlay is custom made for your needs. If we cannot fabricate it that same day, we will send you away with a temporary cap to be replaced by the permanent onlay or inlay during your second appointment.
