Dental Implants - Types and Benefits

dental implants

Dental implants are a boon for people with problems like loose, damaged or absent teeth. People with missing teeth face problems in speech, dental uniformity, oral health and while eating. Implants offer a permanent tooth substitute and restore adequate functionality. At Northland Village Dental Centre, you can get both implants and dentures under restorative dental services.

Your dentist will surgically position a titanium post into the jawbone beneath the gum line. This is followed by a replacement tooth or bridge mounted on the post, which looks and feels totally like a natural tooth. It won’t come loose and isn’t required to be anchored to other teeth like bridges.

Types of Dental Implants:

Implants can be broadly categorized under cosmetic dentistry and are of three types:

  • Endosteal – It is cylindrical or screw-shaped and is also known as ‘root form.’ It is used when the width and the depth of the jaw are abundant, supporting many or a full arch of synthetic teeth. Recovery for this type of implantation takes three to six months.

  • Plate-shaped – It is flat and long, as it is used for narrow bone grafts. Similar to endosteal implants, plate-shaped implants also take three to six months for complete healing.

  • Transosseous implant – The posts of such an implant is inserted from the underside of the chin through the jawbone. It is used in patients with serious loss of bone and can be only used in the lower jawbone. The process requires hospitalization where the patients are supported through general anesthesia. An alternative to this method would be bone grafting followed by root-form implants.

  • Sub-periosteal – It is tailor-made for the patient when the width or bone height is not sufficient. It can be placed in the gums in two ways:

  • Single surgery method – A model of the jaw is constructed using a computerized tomography scan of the jaw. The dental laboratory prepares the implant using this model and the dentist then surgically places it in your jaw. Multiple stitches may be given to close the gums and finally, artificial teeth are fixed to the implant.

  • Dual surgery method – The dentist first cut your gums, takes an impression of the bone and seals it with stitches. Using the impression, a model is prepared in the dental laboratory and the implant is tailored based on the model. In order to place the implant in your tooth, your dentist will have to cut open the gums again. Stitches will be required again to seal the site.

Benefits of Dental Implants:

There are numerous benefits to getting implants such as:

• They look and operate like your natural teeth.

• Long-lasting and strong.

• They stop jaw-bone loss, which is possible in case of missing teeth. Bone loss may lead to shifting and drifting of teeth.

• They offer rigid support. Poor-fitting dentures can slip or slide inside your mouth.

• You can chew all types of food comfortably.

An ideal candidate for receiving implants should have healthy gums and not have high blood pressure or immune system deficiency. People who smoke don’t have healthy bone growth and for such people, the bone may not fuse properly with the implant. Then the implants may loosen and fail gradually.

Avoid smoking at all costs after receiving dental implants. Maintain oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and using a mouthwash. This will help in avoiding cavities which can ruin the implants completely. While brushing, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and do not pressurize the treated area. It is important to brush without injuring or hurting the implants for proper and speedy healing.
